Job Description

HEALING HEARTS MEDICAL CENTER Job Title: Patient Care Assistant Department: Patient Care Services Position Reports To: PCA Supervisor GENERAL SUMMARY Working under general guidance and in adherence to established protocols, the Patient Care Assistant carries out a wide range of responsibilities. The primary role of the Patient Care Assistant is to actively contribute to the daily operations of Patient Care Services, with a focus on assisting in patient care, delivering medical supplies, and handling specimens. Patient Care Assistants collaborate closely with the Patient Care Representatives, Team Leaders, and Supervisors to ensure the delivery of excellent service that meets and exceeds our departmental standards and service commitments. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Highlight primary responsibilities, major tasks, special projects, and key objectives for this position. These aspects will be assessed periodically and included in the formal annual performance evaluations. – The main responsibilities of the Patient Care Assistant include assisting and accompanying patients to their designated locations. Distributing supplies to departments as required and specified. Collection and delivery of specimen samples, both through scheduled rounds and on-demand requests. – Employ transport equipment to move patients by stretcher, wheelchair, or bed, between examination sites, patient wards, and physician offices. Additionally, handling the transportation of specimens to various laboratory facilities, along with delivering supplies and equipment to patient units and operating rooms. – During patient escorting, supply delivery, and specimen handling tasks, Patient Care Assistants must constantly prioritize safety to ensure adherence to hospital protocols, as mandated by annual safety training. – Each of these tasks has specific time constraints that must be met to ensure high-quality service delivery to all hospital customers. The primary goal of Patient Care Assistants is to provide service in a safe and punctual manner, following prescribed training and institutional guidelines. – While escorting patients, handling specimens, and delivering supplies, Patient Care Assistants must comply with Infection Control Standards for equipment sanitation, specimen handling, and supply transportation to units. These standards are thoroughly detailed in departmental policies and procedures. – All assigned duties should be accurately documented and recorded using appropriate tools or methods, as instructed during training, to maintain complete and organized records. – Demonstrates proper body mechanics, care, and attentiveness throughout tasks. – Maintains strict adherence to patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations. – Accountable for accepting and dispatching bulk pharmaceuticals from vendors to the pharmacy or nursing units, and transporting packaged medication orders from the pharmacy to various areas within the healthcare facility. – Fulfill any additional duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Outline the work environment conditions. – Standing/walking for the majority of an 8-10 hour shift. – Lifting/carrying loads up to 40 lbs. following safe lifting guidelines outlined by NIOSH. – Pushing/pulling loads. Initial force of 33 lbs; sustained force of 13 lbs. – Potential risks related to handling soiled linens and equipment.
