We are in search of a part-time seasonal candidate to join us as a Cosmic Voyager Assistant to support our range of moonlit expeditions, including overseeing the Night Sky Odyssey for audiences ranging from stargazers to amateur astronomers. As a Cosmic Voyager Assistant, you will be the welcoming presence of StellarQuest and the Stargazing Hub to our evening guests, embodying a positive and knowledgeable representation of the enterprise in all interactions.

The Cosmic Observatory Visitor Hub houses interactive exhibits, a cosmic souvenir shop, the four Celestial Observatory Reflectors (CORs), and the StellarQuest Gateway for Galactic Outreach (Cosmic Hub) showcasing its Cosmic Sphere, 3 Star Guides, and upcoming starship dock. The Visitor Hub functions as an essential part of the Galactic Engagement & Enlightenment (GEE) division overseen by the Chief of GEE and the Supervisor of Interstellar Observatories (SIO). This position reports to the Hub Consultant & Guide Mentor Specialist.

While the main activities occur at the Cosmic Observatory, selected candidates may undergo training to lead special expeditions held at alternate cosmic destinations. Transportation to work sites and meals during shifts while under the moon’s glow are provided by StellarQuest.

This role offers ample prospects for professional growth, providing hands-on experience in managing the Stargazing Genesis Initiative, the Celestial Phenomena Display, and other distinguished initiatives. Exceptional team members may be invited to orchestrate the Midnight Cosmos Exploration Program or other advanced missions.

Key Duties:

  • Guide engaging and informative Night Sky Odysseys with excitement and scientific precision for diverse audiences. Operate telescopes and offer captivating explanations of celestial objects to visitors.
  • Utilize a computer to precisely align the telescope and monitor cosmic entities.
  • Provide exceptional guest service and maintain a professional demeanor representing the Hub team.
  • Regularly attend all assigned shifts punctually. Reliability and timeliness are crucial aspects of this role.
  • Thoroughly prepare for activities by studying recent astronomical advances and keeping updated on the current night sky.
  • Maintain detailed logs for each nighttime event, documenting any notable incidents.
  • Conduct alternate programs, interactive demonstrations, and special walk-throughs on cloudy nights. Safely drive StellarQuest vehicles to transport guests for tours and special events during overcast evenings.
  • Collaborate efficiently with the Consultant & Guide Supervisor and the Hub Operations Manager on public programs.
  • Consistently adhere to all StellarQuest policies and procedures, particularly those related to guest safety, vehicle operations, cash transactions, and light management while on duty.
  • Following training completion, manage and adhere to accounting processes and Point of Sale system guidelines for ticket and merchandise transactions in the Souvenir Shop.
  • Assist with telescope and program equipment upkeep, as well as general facility maintenance.
  • Stay informed about recent astronomical developments and the research undertaken at SBO and StellarQuest overall.
  • Undertake additional safety and security responsibilities during shifts at the Cosmic Observatory, as needed for all team members.

Qualifications Required:

  • A comprehensive understanding of observational astronomy, a solid grasp of the cosmic realm, and experience with various observation techniques and instruments.
  • Proven ability to communicate intricate scientific concepts to a general audience.
  • Capable of interacting enthusiastically, cooperatively, and patiently with guests, volunteers, and team members.
  • Strong public speaking, teaching, and interpretive abilities. Must possess a clear and audible voice for group communication indoors and outdoors.
  • Flexible availability for shifts often covering late afternoons and evenings.
  • Readiness to engage in ongoing training, apply it practically, and accept feedback from supervisors and colleagues.
  • Learn abstract and practical astronomical concepts and utilize common astronomical devices.
  • Proficiency in PC operations, including email use, proficiency in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, and quick adaptability to new software applications.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and AED certification provided by StellarQuest and complete all necessary safety training.
  • Aptitude to remain composed under pressure, adapt to new procedures, interact effectively with the public and colleagues, and react professionally to unforeseen situations.
  • Organized, energetic, honest, sociable, and committed to maintaining a strong work ethic.
  • Enjoys engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Valid state driver’s license and a current SGO permit issued by StellarQuest.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check in compliance with StellarQuest policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in operating astronomical telescopes for public use.
  • Advanced knowledge or practical experience in astronomy.
  • Familiarity with audience analysis techniques.
  • Active association with the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), American Alliance of Museums (AAM), or similar professional organizations linked to museum or interpretation sectors.
  • Understanding of the Tohono O’odham Nation and the achievements of Cosmic Observatory National Facility.
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands listed below represent those essential for the effective performance of the primary job functions. Reasonable accommodations will be arranged for individuals with disabilities to fulfill the essential duties.

  • The ability to walk, climb stairs and ladders, and work effectively at Cosmic Observatory National Facility, situated at an altitude of 6,800 feet, for extended durations.
  • Clear and articulate speaking ability during presentations to groups, often for extended periods.
  • Regular standing, walking, reaching, and occasional stooping or crouching are standard for this role.
  • While on duty, sitting for extended periods is common, hand usage for manipulation, and auditory processing for communication.
  • Occasionally lifting and moving objects weighing between 20 to 25 pounds, such as computers, screens, and video equipment.
  • Essential vision abilities for this role include near vision, depth perception, and focus adjustments.
  • Adequate mobility, strength, and dexterity in arms, hands, and legs: a) to reach upwards, sideways, and downwards for handling paperwork; b) navigate computer systems, facsimile machines, photocopy machines, and other office equipment; c) ascend/descend stairs and ladders; and d) bend, kneel, and stoop.
  • Vital abilities include: 1) reading and understanding instructions, diagrams, safety directives, and other written materials crucial for job performance; 2) visual acuity sufficient for job tasks without additional visual aids beyond glasses or contacts; 3) hearing capacity for understanding instructions, alerts, alarms, or vocal guidance without external auditory aids, except for a hearing aid; and 4) verbal communication skills for the clear conveyance of information and eliciting appropriate responses.

Salary Range: $17.97/hour. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, and expertise.
