Role Overview
The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) plays a crucial role in delivering direct and indirect patient care services, encompassing routine patient care activities and administrative support functions. In addition to patient care responsibilities, the MSA may assist with supply management, transportation of materials, and ensure patient safety in scenarios requiring close monitoring.
Cardiology Unit Specific: Mastery of EKG procedures and maintaining proficiency in cardiac monitoring are core requirements.
This position falls under the AFSCME Bargaining Unit at St. Luke’s Medical Center.
The MSA is accountable to the Medical Center Manager and is expected to adhere to established organizational and departmental protocols and guidelines.
Candidate Requirements
Requirements, MSA, Certified (Salary Grade C27)
• Completion of high school diploma or equivalent
• Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
• Proficiency in undertaking routine patient care tasks under licensed nursing supervision, necessitating formal training or on-the-job instruction
• Possession of Nursing Assistant certification, Medical Assistant certification, or enrollment in a nursing program with at least 6 months of clinical experience as a student
• Minimum of six months to one year of hands-on nursing assistant experience
• Preferred experience of one to three years in secretarial roles
• Preferential background in healthcare delivery
• Capability to manage multiple tasks and navigate high-pressure situations effectively
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical jargon
• Competent in data entry and proficient in using computers
• Exhibit strong interpersonal skills, organizational aptitude, and both written and verbal communication proficiency

• Successful completion of educational requirements and unit-specific training for MSAs set by the Professional Advancement Department
• High school diploma or equivalent

• Favorable background in the healthcare sector
• Ability to multitask and manage pressure-cooker situations adeptly

• Skill in following written or oral instructions and effective communication
